Microbial Community Biomonitoring using PFU Method Monitors water quality Introduction The principal biomonitoring method in North America is the acute toxicity test. It relies on a single fluorescent species. But toxicity has a broad spectrum of culprits, and the fluorescent species measures only one aspect of it.As the public becomes better educated about the environment, and the impact it has on the quality of drinking water, the need to monitor water resources and issue warnings about the increase in toxicity and pollution levels becomes of greater importance. The current methods used to test for pollution levels in water are inadequate and may yield results which come too late to avert serious catastrophies. Our Technology The PFU (Polyurethane Foam Unit) method was invented by professor John Cairns, Jr. of Virginia Tech in the 1970's.Instead of relying on fluorescence as the measure of toxicity, the PFU method gives a sequence of snapshots of theentire community of microbes that are sensitive to different aspects of toxicity in the water.
