Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced the recent successful transfer of technology to FMC. The Institute developed a new technique for the synthesis of highly purified 2-ethylanthraquinone. This materialis an important in the production of hydrogen peroxide, an important oxidant in use all over the world.
At present, only Mitsui and BASF can produce this 2-ethylanthraquinone. With the new technique developed by SIOC, these is a new economical alternative, resulting in a production volume of 300 tons per year. The quality is judged to be better than available product.
FMC is the world's largest producer of hydrogen peroxide. They have tested the SIOC product and were pleased with the results. The technology was developed by SIOC under the direction of ProfessorYuan Qun.
Rice Technology
In a continuing effort to raise the yield of rice production inChina, Chinese scientists have developed new rice seedlings for dry and scattered planting. This technique has been extended upto 5,925 hectares in the whole country with an increase in cropsof about 600 kilograms per average hectare, thus reaching an overall increase in production of rice by 4 billion kilograms. This has contributed largely to the steady increase of grain productionin China. It is reported that this technique will be popularized in large scale in the whole country to raise the harvest tremendously,in order to complete the task of production rise to 80-100 billion kilograms by the ninth five-year plan.
The Shanghai Pharmaceutical Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced two important breakthroughs: " Identification of highly effective anti-tumor agents" and " Establishmentof a new working model in nude mouse for the study of neoplastics diseases in humans". The animal model is an ideal experimental material for fundamental cancer research and develop of anti-cancer drugs. It highlights the replacement of traditional animal models for cancer study and provides a material basis for directed selection and research of anti-cancer drugs.
Breakthrough in Fermentation
Recently, the Wuhan Virus Institute and the Jiang Su Microbiology Institute jointly took part and succeeded in the intermediate stage test of the -carotene production in the fermentation tank of 3 tons capacity with three successive batches. -carotene is an important ingredient in health food. The average content of carotene in the liquor is 1,146 milligrams per liter with peak at 1,328 milligrams per liter. This is the domestic breakthrough with fermentation technique with capacity at the tonnage level.
Fermentation is an age-old technique practiced in China over two thousand years. It has previously led to such well-known breakthroughs as that in cutting the 7-step process in Vitamin C production to a 2-step fermentation process.
